Fat Tuesday... Ash Wednesday... Valentine Thursday
Original Air Date: February 10, 2008
Show Category:
Life/Misc
Show Description: This week was Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday is the day usually reserved for debauchery because of Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the day reserved to start the Lenten season. It's the day we begin 40-days of preparation towards Easter. So I am going to talk about gluttony and confession. The third hour we are going to examine why I think Valentine's day is a bunch of hooey.

Allen's Legal Pad for Fat Tuesday... Ash Wednesday... Valentine Thursday
What's one sin no one ever talks about?
Most forgotten sin in world?
Gonna tell you what you don't want to hear
More folks should have the courage to say it
May hate me for saying it – and it is hard to hate me
but what I am gonna tell you is correct, factual
Science proves it
Faith shows it
Common sense says it
Being fat is a sin
Don't wanna hear it, I know
But past Tuesday was Fat Tuesday – day before Lent, season of self-denial
Fat Tuesday day of indulgence – friend stuffing down bread on Tuesday since giving it up for Lent
Every day is Fat Tuesday in America
Gluttony is the forgotten sin
Lustful – folks will tell you – know it's wrong
Lazy, slothful – same too
Anger, Greedy, Envious – no debate
But just try saying it out loud – and see the response you get
Being fat is a sin
MS legislature introduced bill – make it unlawful to serve food to obese person
Killed in committee
Provoked outcry from National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance
Coalition of Fat Rights Activists
It's the one no one talks about
But that is what we do here at the AHS
And worse, parents do it to kids – no exercise, junk food, video games, sedentary
Had to have ethics debate on bariatric surgery for teenagers and pre-teens
Would you rather be fat or be greedy?
Is being fat a sin? I have the courage to say yes
Promo – Ash Wed – Lent – atone for sins – choose to confess- next hour
Got a secret need to unload – Ash Wed – perfect time – next hour

Sunday 7:00 Ash Wednesday
Can keeping a secret kill you?
Answer very simple – yes, it can from the inside out
Got secrets you wish you could tell and get off your chest?
Invite you to call and share
Wife stayed up and watched 20-20 on Monday night
Had no interest myself
Joren van der Sloot – Dutch kid – who been sliming and slinking around ever since Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba a few years ago
Well, fellow been befriending him – smoking pot – playing cards
Luring him in
Until moment was right
In car, videotaped him telling all
20-20 showed her mom – watching it for first time
I had no interest
Already knew – we cannot keep secrets inside us
Just not hardwired to be able to do that
Bounces around inside and gotta come out
Took this fellow a while but it came out
Spiritually necessary – conscience and soul cannot rest without doing so
True for a lot of folks – years of ministry
Molested as a child – never told anyone
Cheated on my wife in second year of marriage – 24 years since and still guilty and never told anyone
Had an abortion – woman I worked with for years – had one and never told anyone, wanted to tell husband but could not – had to tell me
Something about us needs that repentance and confession – made that way
Ash Wed – Lent prep for Easter – ashes for humility and mortality – sorrow for sin
Smudged with cross – ashes from last year's palms
Can keeping a secret kill you?
Know folks still carrying stuff and ripping them up inside
Give you a chance tonight – unload baggage
Anonymously or via email
Opportunity to confess deep,dark secret
Keep it from killing you
Sunday 8:00 Buy into the hype of Valentine's Day?
Because I do not – I hate it
Feel better just for saying it
Manmade – MMF like polyester – Hallmark holiday
Guilt you into spending lots of money on silly, temporary stuff that fades away
Flowers at twice the price, chocolates, lingerie no one ever will use
Heart shaped sweet tarts
Empty holiday
Why celebrate forever love with temporary crap?
Hate Valentine's Day – coming off of Christmas, headed into Mother's Day and birthday and wedding anniversary
Does that make me the Ebenezer Scrooge of Valentine's?
Hate Valentine's Day but I love my wife
Just really not into expensive roses and candy just because it is Feb 14
Overhyped – contrarian view
So this year I have a low-cost solution
One that actually costs me something – effort and attention instead of money and frills
Not an early morning riser
At all
Slow to stir – once she does, whoa
Bring her hot tea in bed in the morning
Small act each day for 40 days
Can you be romantic without spending millions of dollars?
Do you buy into the hype of Valentine's Day because I do not?
Do you have creative low-cost ways to show love for your honey?
No lame calls
Ron will not take those
Creative – Interesting - Provocative
