Paying kids $8 per hour to encourage selected students to study after school – cold hard cash

Learn and Earn program – offers 40 students from Creekside HS and bear Creek MS in Fairburn, GA

$8 per hour to study after school

Privately funded program – also cash bonuses to kids who improve in-school performance

15 week trial run - 11th graders and 8th graders

Funded by Charles Loudermilk – CEO of Aaron Rents – through his local nonprofit foundation

And the self-righteous are up in arms over the plan

Bribery

External motivation rather than internal motivation

Insult to hard-working well-behaved kids

Sending kids the wrong message that will catch up with them when they leave school

Preferential treatment for kids selected to participate

I say Balderdash

First of all, private money – Mr Loudermilk can do as he pleases with his money

And if he prefers to incentivize kids needing a little help, I vastly prefer that to his purchasing a yacht or throwing a $2MM wedding like I saw on TV the other night

Second, my grandmother paid me to read

She decided to do the same thing for me

Make sure that I developed my mind and skills as much as developed my throwing arm

Called capitalism, incentive, rewarding behavior that you desire rather than punishing behavior that you do not
