Original Air Date: February 2, 2008 AudioLink_2008_0202
Show Category: Religion
Show Description: Rick Majerus was at a Hillary Clinton rally this week and was interviewed by a KMOV reporter. He was asked why he was at the vent, why he supported Clinton, and if he was pro-choice. The vocal Majerus made it clear he supported the democratic party because it was the "people's party" and that he was pro-choice. Woah baby did this get him in trouble. See, Majerus coaches basketball at a Catholic University, and the Archbishop in his area is not happy with his statements. So join the discussion as we look at free speech and how far that extends in a private institution.

Allen's Legal Pad for
Majerus in Major Trouble

Should he stay or should he go?

Majerus – found self in hot water again

Head coach at St Louis University – Catholic school

Majerus is Catholic

Former coach at Utah – weight, health issues – rotund and bald

I can respect that

Long history of controversial behavior

But now attended Hillary rally and spoke out pro-choice

Here is what he said

Got the attention of Archbishop Raymond Burke in St Louis

Outspoken dude himself

Denied John Kerry communion in 2004 for pro-choice stance

Not pleased that Catholic coach at Catholic school would be pro-choice

Majerus says he was exercising freedom of thought and of speech

Have to say I agree with Burke

Public role as coach at school – probably largest mouthpiece for the school

Knew the Church's position when he took the role

To do something like this in public way is flouting that

Think the school should can him

Some things are more important than winning

Cannot sell soul for publicity of winning record on team

Catholic school has a responsibility to live up to its aim – shape the whole lives of students – spiritually, intellectually, and physically – morally

Mission more important that Majerus

Mission more important than money

Mission more important than March Madness

Majerus cannot support that – needs to go back to Utah

Sure he has the right of free speech, and the right to think as he pleases

But the School has the right to create an atmosphere or environment that achieves its moral purposes

Majerus has the right to coach somewhere else

Clips from Majerus and Burke

Calvin College dispute over church membership – faculty termination
