Why do so many folks treat homosexuality as if it were the Unforgivable sin

Not just Christians

Muslims punishment for behavior is extreme – often death

Black community – disdain for gay men is severe

But some Christians, it goes beyond disdain, to hatred, even vitriol

And I do not get it

Heath Ledger died – The Patriot was excellent – good actor

But he played in Brokeback Mountain – gay lover

And now that he died – folks at Westboro Baptist Church seeking to picket his funeral

Frankly, I do not get it

Why is homosexuality so repugnant and hate-inducing

Why not adultery? Folks really get on my nerves – violating vows, breaking up families = Godhatescheaters.com

Why not pornographers? Dirty, nasty stuff – creates and distorts views of women, sex – warping the values of a whole generation thanks to the internet

Anger after all one of the 7 deadly sins – right there alongside lust

Taught at Yale

One of my favorite students – gay man

Episcopal priest in formation – bi-sexual actually but that is a whole different story

He and I had a number of conversations

Shared why I thought Biblical and traditional position was moral one

He shared why he thought I was wrong

We had good discourse – we respected each other – and we disagreed

He did not hate me – nor did I hate him – he made an A in my class

Now prominent campus minister at a large university

So what's the deal – where does this kind of hatred and vitriol come from?

I do not know but I am gonna ask
