Show Description: I saw a case this week about a Muslim girl who has been running high school track for four years. The only catch is that she is a devout Muslim and has a custom made unitard to cover her body completely. That's right, you heard that correct, a unitard. Well even though she has been racing for three years, apparently, only now someone has objected and she has been disqualified for all future races due to not adhering to high school track uniform code. Is this an infringement of freedom of religion or is this just fairness. Join the conversation as we look at religion in America.

Role of faith in this?

SC debate

Huckabee on faith – role of faith in elections

Tired of folks saying they should not talk about their faith

I want to know everything I can about a candidate

And faith is crucial – here's why

faith not a component of life – center – affects everything I do

Candidate has no faith – tells me a lot – cannot expect them to value life – can expect them to value rational thought without nuance or metaphor or aesthetic meaning

Candidate has ancillary faith – tells me they are shallow on core principles

Candidate has deep faith – want to see how that affects their lives and leadership – may or may not agree – then I can make a decision

Then I will

One element for me

Like president to share that – glad he is open and honest – do not want one antithetical to faith

But do want one who values freedom

Government will not replace the church – cannot give hope, cannot solve all problems

Love for government to do some Christian things

But no such thing as a Christian government – idealistic and utopian nor can we all agree on what that actually is

Values freedom therefore is crucial – freedom to be Christian, to share faith, to embrace or reject faith

And protect us

Mitt and Mormons

Democrats embracing faith

Faith teaches me

1) Hope comes from God not government

2) No candidate is Jesus; nor does any candidate have a corner on the faith marketplace

3) Freedom is precious and rare and therefore to be valued

4) Weak and vulnerable matter – includes the homeless, the mentally ill, and the unborn – how you help them varies – free market, etc

5) Happy for candidates to talk about their faith – we are big people, grown ups, and can use that as part of our decision making – just do not expect me to use that as my sole criterion

Uniform violation

Up in arms

Freedom of religion?

Yes, free to wear what you want wherever you choose

But not free to do that if uniform regulations forbid it

Nudist runner, Jewish runner Orthodox

Free to choose not to participate

College athlete – would not play on Saturdays

Koufax – preferred not to pitch on Saturdays

Ben Utecht – Minnesota – Playboy

Star of the football team this year at University of Minnesota

Offer came – named to the pre-season All-America team – celebrated annually by Playboy magazine – an honor many would kill for, get the name out there, raise ranking for the draft, worked hard for this

Ben turned it down

“I didn’t want to portray the wrong idea of the kind of person I am. I know, football wise, it’s probably bad to turn down something like this, but football is not the most important thing in my life.” (World, 7/22/00)

Free to choose to opt out of all these

Sometimes freedom of religion forces you to make choices

Cannot have allegiances to everything at the same time

British runner Eric Liddell, who refused to run on the Sabbath during the 1924 Olympics. That story was featured into the Oscar-winning movie "Chariots of Fire."

In 1965, Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher Sandy Koufax refused to pitch on the holiest Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, during the World Series.

More recently, former BYU lineman Eli Herring passed up a large signing bonus and a likely NFL career because he didn't want to play on Sundays
