Gambling Our Kids to College

Saturday, December 8, 2007

In Georgia, we have a scholarship that enables any students with a high enough GPA to receive full funding for any state college. The only catch is that it comes from gambling money. And here's the big catch statistics show that the majority of lottery ticket purchasers are the poorest people in society. Statistics also show that the majority of recipients of the Hope scholarship are from middle and upper class families. So we are taking money from the poorest in our state and giving it to the wealthiest. That sounds great, doesn't it. On top of that, it's a state run monopoly. Sheesh. This has wrong sauce all over it. But I seem to be the only one who thinks so. Join the conversation as we look at the lottery and education.
