After inviting you to offer me summer reading suggestions in my weekly email last week and on this blog, I received hundreds of responses. Wow!
So here are the four winners. Not necessarily the most recommended ones but the ones that captured my fancy. Upon return from vacation, I will share my experience with each book.
In no order:
1) Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
Winner in the business/leadership category.
Been meaning to read this book on success and achievement for many moons, and one reader email reminded me that this is one I simply must consume.
2) The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Winner in the novel category. Always gotta have a good novel, and this one got more than a dozen recommenders in my email response. Can't wait to devour this Southern special.
3) Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
by Marcus Luttrell
Highly recommended by several listeners. One description in particular really made me want to read something that is outside of my normal history/biography reading. Usually not a big military reader, but this one sounds intriguing.
4) Extra credit - The Lion by Nelson DeMille
I love DeMille's fiction writing. And this is his new one. He writes page-turners so this will fill my plane trip to and from my friends' house. Thanks for reminding me of this one, King.

Description
The Allen Hunt Show is about faith and life, plain and simple. According to a Gallup Poll in May of 2005, 85% of Americans consider their faith important or fairly important to their lives. Yet there is a gap on the talk radio airwaves that examines where faith and life come together. This show fills that gap like nothing currently on the radio. This is not one more political talk show, nor is it another faith-based counseling show because ultimately, life is not about what is right or left, but about what is right and wrong. The Allen Hunt Show takes on real life issues, with real life people, to see how faith can have a real impact. Join us on Saturdays from 9-12 PM and Sundays from 6-9 PM. Blessings!

I looked at the summary for this book and reviews and though the subject matter seems important, it is still just a NOVEL. I tend to think those of us who are proactive in our faith and moral activities, should take to heart stories written by real people. A novel is still "made up" and a non-fiction book perhaps based on the same subject, would do well to inform and educate instead using truth not fake stuff. Currently, I am reading a book called Trauma and Recovery by Dr. Herman. It is extremely heavy material concerning victims of traumatic events such as abuse, rape and military veterans with PTSD. The history of the psychological study in this field is more alarming than the actual trauma stories, in my opinion. If you don't get to read this over vacation (which would probably ruin your relaxation anyway,) you should try to read this in the future.
e.g. the Holy Bible.
Safe and happy vacation!!
