A Great Book
Back from a nice respite. Time to face 2009 with joy and anticipation. I will post some of my resolutions for the new year later this week. Still working on refining them.

But first - my determination to read more books and watch less TV is paying off.

A great book - The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.
Allen Hunt Show grade = A

David Wroblewski wrote this story. His sublime story-telling impresses me beyond measure. Unfortunately, when an author debuts with such a masterpiece, it is hard ever to match this kind of excellence. Here's hoping Wroblewski defies the odds.

This story has all kinds of things against it.
1) It is extremely long and dense. Requires a lot of work to read but ends up worth every bit of the effort.
2) The plot focuses on a boy and his dog (really, dogs). Sounds cheesy but turns out powerfully well.
3) Oprah highly recommended it. For an Oprah-phobe like me, that was a real deterrent. However, she was right. A real man can admit that now and then.

The coming-of-age story focuses on a boy who is born mute on a farm in Wisconsin. Follows him from childhood into adolescence and beyond. But it is hardly an ordinary or predictable story.

His family raises and trains dogs. The boy develops a rich interior life. The plot twists and turns with great care. The climax surprises and is hardly of the fairy-tale feel-good variety.

This is a real novel. Best I have read by an author of the 1990-2009 period to date. Well done. Again, A!

Gravatar.com He has time to read escapist junk like this and every friggin Harry Potter tome yet no time for any books on evolution; though he has taken time on his show to denounce science he does not understand and shows no interest in learning.

Gravatar.com Allen is not even keeping up with scholarship in his supposed area of expertise (New Testament and Early Christian History as he never fails to let us know.) For example, he still maintains that the Pastorals were written by Paul, even though the vast majority of NT scholars disagree.

Did you know he went to Yale, LC? And he drives a POS Ford truck? 'Cause I don't think he mentions that often enough.

Speaking of great books- here's one that is free online:

The incomparable Bob Price. May God preserve the Bible Geek!

I think that his program was more like Sunday school. I think they gave you a certificate of achievement or something instead of a real degree.

March Madness has begun. No UNC, UCLA, or UCONN. How weird is that? Who wins? Kentucky.
Lost my cell phone overnight, then my home phone got hit by lightning this morning. God has given me a nice gift today. Silence is golden.
Does anyone besides me not really care whether Wal-Mart charges less for black Barbies than for white ones?
Have you watched The Middle? I love that show. Best thing on TV now. Gotta love Brick.
Spring is better than winter. In fact, it is superior in every way. God bless Spring.

Description
The Allen Hunt Show is about faith and life, plain and simple. According to a Gallup Poll in May of 2005, 85% of Americans consider their faith important or fairly important to their lives. Yet there is a gap on the talk radio airwaves that examines where faith and life come together. This show fills that gap like nothing currently on the radio. This is not one more political talk show, nor is it another faith-based counseling show because ultimately, life is not about what is right or left, but about what is right and wrong. The Allen Hunt Show takes on real life issues, with real life people, to see how faith can have a real impact. Join us on Saturdays from 9-12 PM and Sundays from 6-9 PM. Blessings!
