Carlin in Heaven06/25/08Carlin in HeavenWhat a weird week. George Carlin died. One of my top 3 comedians ever (after Seinfeld and Larry the Cable Guy but just before Jim Gaffigan). And a Pew study showed that most Americans, and most Christians, believe that believers of all religions will be in heaven. Really? Wow. Ok - so here's the question. Is George Carlin in heaven now? Carlin was an outspoken critic of religion, and Christianity in general. Called it all B.S. Mocked the Church and the very notion of faith. So is the funny, sarcastic one in heaven? I hope so, but I doubt it. PS - My favorite bit by Carlin is "Stuff." Great commentary on us Americans and our love for our stuff. Second place would be his self-referential piece on being an alpha male on beta blockers, an overachiever and a non-believer. 17 comments
Naw, you guys will be stuck with boring Christian comedians.
Meanwhile, George Carlin will be entertaining us beside the Lake of Fire. Hottest comedy tour ever!

Comment from: Erik [Visitor] Email · http://www.allenhuntshowsucks.com Notice I asked a similar question last week, which he either can't or won't answer. I hope so, but I doubt it.Why does he doubt it? If anyone should be an expert on how to go to heaven it should be Allen, yes? A degree from Bible school, 20 years methodist pastor, and now a Catholic. Surely if anyone knows, Allen must know. Why won't he tell us? What happens to us if we don't go to heaven? How do we know? Is this not an important enough topic to give us some answers?b Notice I asked a similar question last week, which he either can't or won't answer. Well, given the prevalence of erotic mosaics and brothels found in Pompeii I very much doubt any of them are in heaven. Stuff like that makes Baby Jesus cry.

There has to be some lingering grace for someone who brought people to laugh, and many times brought them to laugh at themselves. It may be up to George to claim that grace and have it work for him. I am nervous that his tendency for cynicism will lead to enormous self condemnation.
The literature on near death experiences repeatedly show a thorough life review with much of the joy and the pain one has caused being felt poignantly. I am in awe of the power of man's judgment -- it is so profound that it put the Son of God to death. I speculate that those of us who cause pain in this life (that would be each of us) end up feeling that pain and are exposed to great despair and self condemnation. To overcome that exposure, I am sure there are many things which mitigate. The Our Father calls on us to forgive trespasses and I truly believe acts of forgiveness and prayers of forgiveness give great aid. Of course, claiming the Grace of the Redeemer is the most useful mitigation. Embracing the sacrament of reconciliation at least annually is great training, I think, for this life review and teaches us to get beyond self condemnation. God probably has many more ways to redeem His people back to Himself. I am enormously grateful for the sacramental faith that has been made available to me, and for the Old Testament faith community that made my Christian faith possible.

Why is it so hard to talk about these things? Why is it so hard to be real with people and seek answers together? I don't know. I'm emotional as I write this. I don't know why. I just don't understand why we can't talk about these things. WTF is wrong with the world that we can't just talk to each other and figure something out together. Are we afraid of the questions? the answers? If not now, when will we have a real conversation? Someone tell me if you can. I'm tired of playing in a spiritual sandbox. I want truth and candor, no matter whether it's painful or not. Is that too much to ask?
There has to be some lingering grace for someone who brought people to laugh, and many times brought them to laugh at themselves. A special dispensation for comedians? Must be in the Gospel of Mark30339, part of YAT (Yet Another Testament) or something. 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me, excepting the comedians, for verily I say to thee, they cause much rejoicing

In the end, we all belong to God. Judgment is in His hands.
Clearly, Christians like me believe that salvation and eternal life come through faith in Jesus Christ. That is the faith revealed to us through Scripture and the Church in addition to our own experience. I.e., it is quite simple. Believe in Him and follow where He leads. We often make it a lot more complicated. Sometimes for good reason as we seek understanding. But it is always important to remember that, in the end, we all belong to God. It is His role to judge. My faith teaches me to trust Him more than my own reason or our culture's political correctness.
I think that we should not sit in judgement of George Carlin... his faith is only known to God alone.

Read Philippians 2:12.
Still good advice.

Indeed, Erik, indeed. Thank you
"You have to work out your salvation". What? I thought salvation was a free gift?

Friend, surely you're not the last Cainanite [or Canaanite?], and surely you will trump all with the last word.
The good news according to Mark30339 is based in part on Rev. Howard Storm's MY DESCENT INTO DEATH, and to a lesser extent on other near death books like 23 MINUTES IN HELL by Bill Wiese, 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN by Rev. Don Piper. These people endured a death experience. Storm is interesting because he was an ardent non-believing college professor. I very much doubt that he will quote scripture to comfort you on who is and who isn't destined for communion with God.

I believe God gives everyone chance after chance after chance to accept His free gift of salvation. If George Carlin accepted that gift, even if it was mere seconds before he died, then yes, he's in heaven.
Even though he spent a large portion of his life railing against organized religion, and the Catholic Church in particular, I pray he chose to take that free gift.
Really, grown men talking about such a silly subject. May as well be speculating on how many angels can dance on a pin. If you want to be taken seriously first you have to PROVE heaven actually exists. Once that's done you can discuss the probability of Carlin being there. Yet, there is no proof of God or heaven or hell. Why oh why do people believe such silly unsupported rubbish? A little critical thinking please!
"6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me,"
OK, now where does this say you need only say you accept Jesus, or believe in him, or whatever, in order to get to heaven? Has it ever occurred to you that as a mystical teacher, who often spoke in parables, & not always so 100% literally (as if all his quotes in the Bible are verbatim), that just perhaps by "I am the way...", he was speaking in terms of living life "his way", in accordance with his teachings & hia lifestyle and with the consciousness he both taught & exemplified? Why did we get so stuck on the outer, belonging to a certain church, talking about how much you love Jesus, or that he's your savior, and not nearly as much in actually putting his teachings INTO ACTION? As a Jew, he was from a tradition that emphasized the importance of living in the spirit of God, NOW, in making THIS life the highest priority, and loving & helping others because it's the right thing to do, and not simply to ensure a "reward" in the after-life. How absurd a concept is it, that what you do while alive on earth is not as important as simply belonging to the right church, professing your belief in Jesus, and worship of him! In fact, I would bet Jesus constantly feels frustrated that he sacrificed his life here, attempting to teach us just a few intrinsic, spiritual "rules" to live by, and instead we toss those aside, giving them lip service on Sundays, and put most of the focus on touting him, as if he were campaigning for president, or our favorite Beatle. Thus, instead of helping the poor, loving our neighbors as ourselves, being humble & forgiving, & acknowledging the oneness of all mankind, we treat God/Jesus as "ours", our view of spirituality as the only right one, & tout our own personal religion as being "more right" than even the other 30,000+ denominations within Christianity. And with great arrogance, competitiveness, & even rage & violence, we set about trying to convert others, because they are, of course, "WRONG"! That's why I shudder, & feel so discouraged in hearing crap like Allen saying that ALL the other major religions (most having been around far longer than Christianity) "have some elements of truth"!!! Please, as if he, or I, or anyone is the arbiter of all spiritual truth! How is having so arrogant & narrow–minded a mindset following the path of Jesus??? This is why religion, its rules, and mainly it's "true-believers" drove George Carlin so nuts! As he said: "When it comes to God's existence, I'm not an atheist and I'm not an agnostic. I'm an acrostic. The whole thing puzzles me." And: "The two big mistakes were the belief in a sky god- that there's a man in the sky with 10 things he doesn't want you to do and you'll burn for a long time if you do them- and private property, which I think is at the core of our failure as a species. That's the source of my indignations, my dissatisfactions, however it comes out on the stage. I feel betrayed by the people I'm part of, these creatures, these magnificent creatures."
Final word on the final resting place of George Carlin's soul:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Fred-Phelps-George-Carlin-is-now-in-Hell The question should be settled now, right?

Nice to see Allen and Fred in agreement. I think they both skipped that 'judge not' stuff.
