Where I Am Not Taking My Daughter to College
EmoryUniversityMy older daughter and I have been visiting colleges this summer, looking for the places that fit her best to apply to for next year. One school that will not be on our list is Emory University here in Atlanta. The extremism of that campus continues unabated.

The latest example comes in their seminary, the Candler School of Theology. Remarkably, Emory has now hired a woman, who has no theology training or education, to lead a seminary to train pastors. Dr. Jan Love holds no theology degrees, has never attended seminary, and is not even an ordained pastor. In other words, the person hired to be ultimately responsible for leading a seminary to train pastors is completely unqualified to do so. Perhaps she is an able administrator or fund-raiser, you ask? Not quite. In her last role, Dr. Love led an organization to approximately an $8MM operating deficit on a budget of about $30MM while membership in her organization continued to decline. Hardly stellar leadership skills.

Why would Emory hire someone like this? She holds exceptionally impeccable credentials in the area of political correctness. Her extreme views on abortion and homosexuality fall far out of the bounds of traditional Christian faith. And that is exactly why Emory has hired her. The extremism of that campus continues unabated. And sadly, as a United Methodist pastor, I am required by Church law to continue to help fund such extremism.

Gravatar.com First of all...I am glad to see you blogging...Second of all, I will be doing the online program for seminary at Asbury due to the fact that Emory is going way to extreme for this UMC pastors taste...

Gravatar.com The Methodist Church has adopted an 'anything goes" attitude toward behavior and it will be its' undoing.

I have lead an adult Bible Study class for 3 years at Loganville UMC and really struggle when our leaders condone what is clearly a destructive lifestyle.

If a backbone in the leadership is not quickly discovered, Methodism will continue in its decline.

Gravatar.com It is not only sad, but tragic that United Methodism has gone the way it has. I left the UMC many years ago. Grew up in the UMC went to Young Harris and such, but when anyone or any organization doesn't have a high view of scripture, you get what you got.

Gravatar.com Allen: Your remarks on Emory are right on the mark. I would add Duke to your no-go list. Keep up the good work. I've been a Methodist for 70 years but still struggling to stay one. Lloyd

Gravatar.com Allen, Emory can't be all bad. Let's not forget there are some good things that come from Emory. You, me, and my daughter-in-law all graduated from Emory and we turned out okay. Well, my daughter-in-law and I did anyway.

Gravatar.com I second that Emory is not all bad. I'm an Emory student AND a member of your congregation, Allen. Emory is a fantastically rigorous academic environment, just don't go there to study anything having to do with faith. Emory has gready business, medical, and law programs as well some amazing christian fellowships on campus. Don't turn your daughter away just because of the liberal atmosphere. That is the rule rather than the exception at all colleges at this point. It can be a great faith-strengthening experience. As long as you steer clear of the theology school and are always prepared for a theological debate with a liberal professor, Emory can be a wonderful place.

Gravatar.com I too would never send my child to Emory, or to Duke University either, for that matter. These universities have turned their backs on their Methodist and Christian foundations, which they have replaced with leftist agendas. While doing the college visit thing with our son a few years ago, we were struck that the beautiful chapel at Duke does not have a cross or any symbol of Christianity in it at all. Political correctness, I suppose.

And while I’m at it, let’s add Georgia Tech to the list! I am friends with the two students who have sued Tech for its flagrant and numerous violations of their freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

As a research librarian, I have also corresponded with reference department head Scott Savage of the Ohio State University – Mansfield campus who was charged with sexual harassment for merely recommending a conservative book, The Marketing of Evil, by David Kupelian, for the required reading list for incoming freshmen students. Mr. Savage made this recommendation to offset the overabundance of liberal books that had already been suggested by the faculty.

Parents considering colleges for their children should keep their eyes very wide open, and do their own homework before committing to a particular college. I decided to read the college newspapers online for all colleges we were considering, and I also checked the list of clubs and organizations to see if it were balanced. Another good idea is to look at the school calendar to see what types of speakers are invited to speak throughout the school year. You may be shocked at what you uncover – things not covered in the glossy and upbeat viewbooks the colleges send out!

Our children may be able to receive a good education at these highly ranked colleges, but they must also be very well grounded in their faith before they set foot on these campuses, because their faith and values will surely be tested there.

Gravatar.com So Allen does not want his daughter to go to Emory because they are not Christian enough. She is supposed to get an education there Allen, not sermons. I reckon being a daughter of a pastor with radio-evangelist ambitions has given her enough preaching to last a lifetime anyway.

After all the praise Allen has heaped on that "miserable toad" Jerry Falwell after his death maybe he'll send SarahAnn (interesting way to spell a double first name together like that) to Liberty University (of course neither part of that moniker really fits the institution). There she can learn that the Earth is 6,000 years old and will be subject to a Victorian code of conduct which will assure that Allen can give her away to her future husband as an unspoiled virgin. Or something like that. Definitely much better than learning that homosexuality might not be a sin or that the Bible is not the inerrant word of god after all.

What's Allen Up To?

Description
The Allen Hunt Show is about faith and life, plain and simple. According to a Gallup Poll in May of 2005, 85% of Americans consider their faith important or fairly important to their lives. Yet there is a gap on the talk radio airwaves that examines where faith and life come together. This show fills that gap like nothing currently on the radio. This is not one more political talk show, nor is it another faith-based counseling show because ultimately, life is not about what is right or left, but about what is right and wrong. The Allen Hunt Show takes on real life issues, with real life people, to see how faith can have a real impact. Join us on Saturdays from 9-11 PM and Sundays from 6-9 PM. Blessings!
